NFL Chicago Bears Scouting Challenge Coin

NFL Chicago Bears Scouting Challenge Coin

When approached to design a challenge coin for the Chicago Bears scouting team, we were very excited to have a chance to craft a LOCAL symbol of the relentless pursuit of football excellence. From the very start, our goal was to create a piece that captured the heart of Bears scouting—and the legacy of passion. Every detail, would be chosen to reflect the high stakes of scouting for one of the NFL’s most historic franchises. The coin needed to be a testament to the hard work, sharp instincts, and dedication required to identify the next generation of gridiron greats. After all, the Bears’ scouting team works with top prospects and key contributors. We knew that each one would carry the weight of a football dynasty.

NFL Scouting and Scouting Challenge Coins

Scouting in the NFL is about finding talent that can shape the future of the game. For the Chicago Bears, scouting has been an essential cornerstone of their storied history, ensuring that each new generation upholds the legacy of grit, determination, and excellence. The process is meticulous, the stakes are high, and the results can define a franchise for years to come.

That’s why scouting challenge coins hold such significance. Designed for the heroes who identify and cultivate football’s rising stars, scouting coins encapsulate the passion and history that fuel the Chicago Bears. Team logos, legendary player tributes, and the iconic "Monsters of the Midway" moniker, are elements that would elevate each coin to tell the story of tradition and triumph.

George Halas and the Founding of the Chicago Bears as the Staleys

Before scouting could shape the Bears' future, George Halas built the foundation, Affectionately known as "Papa Bear," laid the foundation for one of the most iconic franchises in NFL history when he founded the Chicago Bears. Originally established in 1919 as the Decatur Staleys, the team was sponsored by the A.E. Staley Company, which Halas managed. Halas not only coached the team but also played on it, showing his hands-on dedication to building a competitive football club. His vision and leadership turned the Staleys into a team that would eventually become synonymous with football greatness. The Staleys were just the beginning of a dynasty that still resonates today with Bears fans everywhere.

From the Staleys to the Chicago Bears

That dynasty took its next step in 1921 when Halas moved the team to Chicago. He understood that the city’s vibrancy and growing passion for football demanded a new identity. Renaming the team the Chicago Bears in 1922 was a nod to the city’s baseball team, the Cubs, as they shared Wrigley Field. The name change reflected strength and tenacity, perfectly fitting for a football team that aimed to dominate. With this transition, the Bears cemented themselves as a cornerstone of professional football, a team built to dominate.

Notable Chicago Bears Players

Dominance isn’t just about a name; it’s about the legends who wear the jersey. The Chicago Bears have been home to some of the most legendary players in NFL history. From Walter Payton, known as "Sweetness," to Dick Butkus, whose name became synonymous with toughness, the Bears' roster is a roll call of football greats. Players like Mike Ditka, Gale Sayers, and Brian Urlacher carried the torch of excellence, defining what it means to wear the navy and orange. Including these icons on a scouting challenge coin is a reminder that joining the Bears means stepping into greatness.

Chicago Bears Notable Trophy Wins

Great players lead to great victories, and the Bears' trophy case tells a story of dominance. The franchise has claimed nine NFL championships, including their iconic Super Bowl XX victory in 1986 under Coach Mike Ditka. That championship run, powered by the suffocating "46 Defense" and immortalized by the "Super Bowl Shuffle," remains one of the most celebrated moments in football history. Beyond that, numerous division titles and playoff appearances highlight the Bears' enduring legacy as one of the league’s most formidable teams.

Nicknames on Challenge Coins

That legacy extends beyond the field and into the collectibles that honor it. Adding a nickname like "Monsters of the Midway" to a challenge coin transforms it into a treasured piece of history. This iconic moniker, originating in the 1940s, perfectly encapsulates the Bears’ hard-hitting, relentless defense. Whether celebrating a historic championship run or paying tribute to an all-time great, incorporating such details into a challenge coin elevates it from a simple memento to a symbol of pride, passion, and tradition.

The coin itself could be considered a masterpiece of tradition and pride. A large, round silver coin set in classic Bears colors—orange, blue, and white— it commands attention. At the center is a bold blue “100,” outlined in orange and white, with the iconic Bears logo nestled at its edge. Just below, the phrase "Da Bears" in bright orange lettering adds a playful yet proud nod to the team's enduring spirit. Surrounding these central elements are three raised silver figures: #51 Dick Butkus, #34 Walter Payton, and George Halas, the legendary founder. Halas is accompanied by a football inscribed with "1920" and the team’s original name, "Staleys," in orange—an homage to their roots. The coin’s bottom proudly displays the Lombardi Trophy with the Roman numeral "XX," celebrating their unforgettable Super Bowl XX victory, while a silver plaque allows for custom numbering of up to 600 coins.

The coin’s orange border is a tribute to the many players and coaches who have shaped the Bears’ legacy. It features the names of Hall of Famers and team legends:

These individuals have left an indelible mark on football history, and their inclusion on the coin reflects their enduring impact on the sport.
